Dauntless: Elemental Tailgem – How to Get Them

Dauntless elemental tailgem intro image.

In Dauntless, an elemental tailgem is a loot item that drops only rarely. Elemental tailgems are used to create exotic armor and weapons, such as The Hunger and The Godhand. An elemental tailgem can only drop from threat level 8+ elemental behemoths. Now, that alone does not make it difficult to get one, but there is a twist to it.

To get an elemental tailgem, you need to cut the tail off a threat level 8+ elemental behemoth, and you need to do it within two minutes of entering combat. You read that right, in under two minutes. This, of course, means that you need to have some good tactics in place.

First of all, you need a weapon that can deal out extra part damage. This can be an ax, the chain blades or a sword, I would not use the repeater as you really need the combo damage addition for this to work. You should also be sure to use a weapon of the opposing element, so Blaze against Frost elements and Shock against Terra and vice versa. Be sure that you have your weapon of choice upgraded to it’s highest level possible. With luck, this should be enough to break off a part of the head quickly to hopefully get that elemental tailgem. For a little extra initial damage, throw a grenade at the behemoths tail as you run up to it.

If you are unable to do this on your own you will need to get your teammates to use only part damage weapons and concentrate their own attacks on the behemoths tail. With enough concentrated damage to the tail it should break off in a short enough time. As in any game, the best way to find teammates that are willing to take part in this plan is through a guild.

What Behemoth is Best to Farm Elemental Tailgems.

Here you need to consider how the behemoths move about in combat. What you want is a behemoth with a large tail that moves slowly around. As an example, the Frostback Pangar is a slow-moving frost behemoth which you can hit hard in the first two minutes. The Dreadfrost Boreus would also qualify if it wasn’t for that pesky immunity shield it gets. For a blaze tailgem, I would go after the Firebrand Charrogg. In any case, it is up to you and your teammates to form a plan to cut the behemoths tail of quickly enough.

The Frostback Pangar behemoth. As a frost behemoth it can drop a frost tailgem when it’s tail is cut off within two minutes of combat.

Finally, it should be noted that a similar approach is needed to get elemental tailgems and elemental claw gems, with the target being the behemoths claws or head instead of the tail.

So that’s about all you need to know about getting elemental tailgems in Dauntless. If you found this information useful then please to share it with your friends and allies in Dauntless and feel free to check out my other Dauntless guides.
