In BDO, fences are used to grow crops with the farming lifeskill. To be able to grow your own crops you must have a fence, which you need to rent from NPC’s. The location of those NPC’s is shown in the list below.

You can have at most 10 fences per account. The only other limit on the number of fences you have at each time is the number of contribution points (CP) you have available as it costs CP to rent a fence.
The Fences Contribution Point Cost and Number of Maximum Crops
- Small Fence = 3 CP – 4 crops max
- Plain Fence = 6 CP – 7 crops max
- Strong Fence = 10 CP – 10 crops max
- Old Moon Fence = 10 CP – 10 crops max
We see from this that the small fence can have the most crops per CP. However, keeping the fact in mind that you can only have ten fences at most you would at some point need to upgrade to larger fences if you intend to maximize your planted crops number. The best way to do that is to start by getting 10 small fences. After that you should start to upgrade them to plain fences once you have the available CP and then strong or old moon fences.
Old Moon Fences
The old moon fences are special BDO fences that require you to have master 1 farming skill. They are just like strong fences, except they take less space. This is useful as it means you can stuff more farms in a smaller area, reducing the traveling time between your farms.
How to Locate NPC’s Which Rent Fences
You can also find these NPC’s directly in-game so you won’t need to return to this page regularly. By using the NPC locator in-game you can both find the NPC’s which rent fences and get an auto-path to them. Below is an image that explains this.
However, you do need to have interacted with the NPC’s first before you can search for them using this method. But since you probably do interact with every NPC you find as you should, probabilities are that you have already interacted with them as they are not hard to locate.
How to Place Fences.
You need to place a fence outside any safe zones that exist in the game. Once you are outside a safe area (when the zone name on the minimap is red) you just need to right-click on the fence in your inventory. This will open up the placement interface where you can place the fence on the ground. You need to move your fence to a location where it all shows blue before you can place it. If you have many fences you can opt to have them placed right next to each other if space allows it.
The location of the fence can have an effect on the growth rate of plants. You should compare the optimal climate of the seeds you are planting to see where in Black Desert Online the best place for that plant is. You can see information on temperature, groundwater, and humidity from the map by using the icons on the top right side.
Once the fence is placed you are ready to start planting crops. You now need to open up the plant placement interface by walking to the center of the fence and press the R button. Once there you can select the seeds you wish to plant and place them in the fence.
So this is just about all there is to fences, whereas there is way more to know when it comes to farming as a whole. But if you liked this brief explanation then please share it with your friends and allies in Black Desert Online and feel free to look at my other guides on Black Desert Online.
